Dynamite Johnny O'Brien journals, 1928-1930.

The Dynamite Johnny O'Brien journals consist of three volumes, written between 1928 and 1930, detailing the life of sea captain John Augustine O'Brien and his adventures as a sailor and captain. Journal I covers the years 1851 - 1889 and details O'Brien's cruises to Asia and the South Seas from Seattle and San Francisco. Also included in Journal I is an account of O'Brien's expedition to Alaska to prospect for gold. Journal II covers the years 1889 - 1909 and O'Brien's experiences as a steamship captain in Alaskan waters. Journal III, 1909 - 1930, includes O'Brien's time as captain on the Victoria sailing the Seattle to Nome route, his experiences captaining various cruises throughout the world, and his later years spent as a pilot on the Columbia River in Washington.

John Augustine O'Brien was born in the city of Cork, Ireland on January 29, 1851. Rather than be sent away to boarding school in London, O'Brien ran away to sea in 1866. He received his Master's Certificate from the American Shipmaster's Association in New York. Traveling west to Portland, Oregon, he married Emily Showers in 1878. Except for a brief period spent prospecting for gold in Alaska, he spent the rest of his life as a ship's captain or pilot. From the description of Dynamit...
